Where we’re based

Quarter Sawn Oak in Edale, Derbyshire.

Quarter Sawn Oak is an independent sawmill and timber supplier based in the beautiful village of Edale, Derbyshire, at the heart of the Peak District National Park. From our workshop in the Hope Valley, we supply high-quality quarter sawn oak and hardwood timber to furniture makers, joiners and private customers across Derbyshire and throughout the UK. Many customers take the opportunity to visit Edale when collecting timber from us travelling the length of the country to select boards in person.

Location

Our location is central to who we are. Surrounded by the rugged landscapes of the Peak District, beneath the slopes of Kinder Scout and close to the iconic Great Ridge and Mam Tor, we work in a place shaped by natural materials, craftsmanship and a deep respect for quality that has endured for generations.

Edale has long been known as the gateway to the Peak District and to serious walkers is the official starting point of the 268 mile Pennine Way (starting at the Old Nags Head Pub). Britains oldest and most celebrated national trail. The village is twinned with Kirk Yetholm just over the Scottish boarder, which marks the northern end of the route.

The landscape here continues to inspire the work we do, often take time to admire the panoramic views of Kinder Scout when travelling over Mam Tor, especially when the heather is in flower.

Local attractions

Customers often take the opportunity to enjoy a walk in the beautiful Edale valley when collecting timber from us. Linking a trip to see us with opportunity to enjoy the local Cafes at Newfold Farm and the Penny Pot, (near Edale train Station) or the two pubs of The Rambler Inn and The Old Nags Head.

Close to Edale is Mam Tor, Rushup Edge and Lose Hill, Winnats Pass, Kinder Scout, the Howden, Derwent and Ladybower Reservoirs,(Ladybower being associated with the famous Dambuster 617 squadron of the RAF) and Castleton. Edale is made up of five Hamlets – Upper Booth, Barber Booth, Grindsbrook Booth, Ollerbrook Booth and Nether Booth. In the past, the Vale of Edale was isolated – the glowering heights of Kinder Scout to the north and Rushup Edge and Mam Tor to the south made it difficult to reach.   Everything changed when the railway arrived in the heart of the countryside – the Cowburn Tunnel cut through the rocks to provide the connection to Manchester, and the Totley Tunnel provided the link to Sheffield.

Edale is now a popular destination for visitors, offering the perfect break for those wanting simply to relax, for those who want to explore and visit the many attractions in the local area, and for those who want an adventure packed break.

Heritage

Many generations ago there was a sawmill based behind The Old Nags Head, which at the time was a small village inn, along side an undertakers and joiners workshop. There are multiple examples around the village of the work which came from this workshop. All of it excellent quality fitted cabinetry, including a fabulous quarter sawn oak floor in the dining room of the Nags Head pub. The frame of the saw pit can be seen in the picture below.

For us, being based in Edale is more than simply a postcode. It is a connection to the landscape, the materials we work with and the traditions of British craftsmanship that continue to shape our business today. We are proud to supply exceptional oak timber from the heart of Derbyshire, helping our customers create projects that will last for generations.
